Exploring Philippines 73 - Marinduque (Post 8 - Moriones Festival's Station of the Cross)

Our Good Friday was indeed good.  We woke up early and went to the town proper to watch the much anticipated event of the lenten season, the station of the cross.  The station of the cross is the most celebrated event every year and the roads of Boac will mimic the road to calvary in the old times.  The program will start at the town plaza and will also end on the same venue.

I went alone to the venue where the station of the cross would start.  My colleagues opted to stay in the house of Tin because the station of the cross will still pass that part of the town.

While waiting for the big event to start, the crowd had a great time taking pics with the Morion participants.  Actually, it was one grand moment, a haven for photography enthusiasts.  All Morion participants were present to observe the station of the cross and the whole town of Boac waited with great anticipation on this event to commence.

I saw a wooden cross being laid to the concrete ground.  I thought that it was just a so-so props for that event but the moment the Morions lifted the wooden cross, it was heavier than I expected.  Wow.

After some time, the crowd became alive.  Everybody was in frenzy mood. The station of the cross had started.  The Morions with uniform outfits came out first.  They act as Roman guards.

The moment the station of the cross started, one can really feel the sudden jubilation of the waiting crowd.  Since this is a yearly celebration, marshals are the ones ensuring the order of this event.  The crowd will normally try to squeeze themselves (including me) with the participants in order to have a better view of the star of the show and the accompanying dramatization of the said event.  Ropes had been provided at both sides of the street and were tightly managed by other participants dressed as ordinary folks in the old times.  And since I planned to cover the said event, together with the rest of photographers, I joined them and mingle with the Morions as the station of the cross started.

The person who acts as Jesus Christ is a neighbor of Tin and has been playing the role for several years.  According to the family of Tin, he is very much into the role of Jesus and his acting skills is really good.  They added that he might be portraying the said role for a couple more years and he will relinquish the much coveted role to another willing participant afterwards.  And when I saw him, I could say that his serious face showed his years of experience playing the role of Jesus.
