Moment 68 - Protest

Last night, I was taken aback by the news on tv that a group of demonstrators try to maul an alleged freelance photographer. According to the news, the group of demonstrators got angry with the alleged freelance photographer joining their group because he might be an agent/spy of the government. Luckily, due to the quick response of the policemen, the alleged freelance photographer had been shielded from possible harm.

I had some moments with demonstrators and I learned some things in order not to entertain troubles during the course of their demonstration.  First of all, one should be a media practitioner to have an easy access to the line of protesters. Secondly, you should be part of the group or their affiliate. And lastly, you should ask permission from the protesters if they will allow you to take pictures during their protest.

Covering a protest is no easy task and as a photographer, you may get hurt in the process. During the protest, the tension could not be pacified easily. And at any given time, a small incident can spark a commotion and can aggravate the heat among the protesters. If you will be caught in the process, you'll turn out to be helpless victim.

This is an important lesson for everyone who are thinking that covering a protest is fun. Think of your safety first before following your passion.  Those pictures are not worth risking your life.
