Exploring Philippines 11 - Tibiao, Antique (Post 2 - Bugtong Bato Falls)

After the fish spa, I learned that bugtong bato falls is still an hour away. I planned to bring the kids with me but since it is an unfamiliar territory, I send them home. Their safety is still my main concern. It was good that my oldest niece came with us and she was the one who accompanied the small ones back home.

I took a motorbike ride from Importante street towards the barangay where the hike will commence. If you are new here, though at times some people may take advantage of the situation, the fare towards the holding station is only 20 pesos. I can honestly say that the drivers in this part of the province are honest on their passengers. That means you don't have to fear for overcharging or people taking advantage of you.

The motorbike accommodates 2 passengers but if you are in a hurry, you can pay 40 pesos for a solo ride. It will take 15 minutes to reach the destination and the road is partially okay. There are some  concrete parts and there are still what we call a dusty one.  In this remote part of the town, the motorbike is the fastest means of transportation and a common one. Private vehicles are rarely seen on remote areas.

Anyway, as you cover the whole stretch, you'll feel that you are closer to nature. The moment the motorbike reaches an uphill climb, a canopy of leaves and branches cover the path. The moment the breeze sweeps the way, you'll feel, taste, and experience the real country fresh air. And that experience alone is already a reward to a weary soul.

Along the way, you will also have a full view of Tibiao river. I was awed by its very sight. It is huge with its water is pristine and abundant. Even during dry season, it never runs dry. Its unspoiled nature defines a certain pride to its people and I commend the people who continuously care and protect this area.

After 15 minutes, we finally reached the holding area.  Every visitor is required to log in at the barangay hall and pay the entrance fee of 10 pesos.  If you are new to the place, a guide will be provided by the barangay and you have to pay 100 pesos in return. The guide will accompany you all throughout the trip until your safe return. And the good thing is, you can stay as long as you want on the falls.

From the barangay hall to the falls, be prepared for a 45-minute hike.  If you are a fast hiker, you can cover the whole stretch for 30 minutes. But if you are going to take your time, you'll definitely spend more time. But you don't have to worry for there are so many good things you'll find along the way.
  • One. The people here are courteous and friendly. If you can't speak the dialect, you can still converse with the locals in Tagalog. Whenever you give your smile, you'll have one in return. They are already used to seeing visitors and they will not lay a single finger on you.
  • Two. As you hike to the falls, the lush greenery is a witness to your visit. If you come here during the planting season, you'll be marveled by the green environment. Literally, every aspect is a shade of green.
  • Three. You'll pass through a couple of streams. The flow of the water in the streams is like a enchanting music to the ears. And if you can't stand the heat, a good refreshing dip could be enticing.
  • Four. The heat of the sun and your sweat make a good hike. Though none of us would like to smell awful, I consider the heat of the sun a good outdoor experience. But if you are fearful about the burn, better equip yourself with a sun block and an overhead protection perhaps.
  •  Five. The cool and refreshing country breeze makes you close your eyes and savor every passing wind. It is a luxury that we often times care less.
  • Six. The duration of the hike is a fun hike. Aside from getting your legs go to work, there is no steep climb to fear nor dangerous turns to worry about. The whole journey is just like a walk in the park.
  • Seven. And the most exciting of them all would be that ever present anticipation about the falls. It is  something to look forward to. A marvel to unravel. An enormous beauty that awaits  at the end of the line and rewards greatly those who are patient and persistent.
And my journey to the falls continue.
